His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman

Premium Review Definately one to read (202 words)
by Boyley1970 - written on 09/09/08 (Useful, 27 readings)
Rating:

Definitely one of the best fantasy trilogies around at the moment and for me would be hard to beat as its one of the best I have read. Although its categorised for children it can and should be enjoyed by enthusiasts of all ages. From the first pages of the first book (The Northern Lights) you will be hooked, transported to Lyras Oxford (cue another book) and wish you could have your own daemon to be with you. In the second book (The subtle knife) when her and your worlds collide you will find yourself looking for that tear in the fabric that could get you to her world and follow her and Will in there adventures. The last book (the Amber Spyglass) takes you to even more new worlds and ...

The Subtle Knife - Philip Pullman

Premium Review Adventure that keeps you on a knife's edge (367 words)
by dopey copey - written on 17/02/01 (Useful, 24 readings)
Rating:

hundreds. I recently only started reading children's adventures and some of them are better than the adult alliterative. Books like the Harry Potter series and His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman are some of these books, The Subtle Knife is the second book from His Dark Materials, I have not read the first yet as I could not get hold of it but I don't think you need to read it first. Will Parry is a 12 year old boy living a life with no friends, no father and a mother who is scared of something he does not understand. Soon he has to leave his mom with his piano teacher because he is afraid she will be taken away, and while back at home he ...

A Shadow in the North - Philip Pullman

Premium Review The Shadow in the North (and the Victorian trilogy) (394 words)
by Tara - written on 31/08/00 (Very useful, 128 readings)
Rating:

This is the second book in a trilogy of thrillers about the Victorian underground and three young friends named Sally, Frederick and Jim. Each book follows the same formulae: several mysteries, unsolved crimes and strange occurrences, linking together to finally form one single case. It is written in third person from the point of view of all the characters, however unimportant or inconsistent they are in the story. By using this method Pullman is able to follow the “baddies” actions without giving away their true identities and intentions. There is a strong female lead and good supporting characters in the form of an office boy come stage hand/play writer, a ...
