I first saw this book in a book shop where I had flicked through it, but first got a proper look at it when a friend bought it as a gift for a mutual friend. Then I knew I had to have it. I described it to another friend as featuring “Every country in the world, and some others”. She was, understandably, rather confused by my statement about what these other countries actually were! Whilst the book is a travel book (rather than a reference book or atlas) and does indeed feature every (known) country in the world it has added some others under the guise of artistic license. For example, various Caribbean islands and groups which are actually dependencies of ... Read the complete review

This is a fantastic book from Lonely Planet. The first thing to mention is the sheer extensiveness of it - it covers literally every country on the planet. I envy the researchers and staff at Lonely Planet. In fact, after I've written this review, I'm sending a job application to them! As the blurb on the introduction to the book says, it covers 231 countries and each country has been given equal weighting in its description, facts and photos. The book is not an atlas, or a dictionary, but has carved out a niche of being an instantaneous reference book. Not a full on travel guide, but an ideal way to get your appetite for travel going, and a good way to pick ... Read the complete review

If I still had my coffee table - I don't because I needed the space for my drinks trolley (St Oswald's Hospice Shop £5.00) - this book would have pride of place on it. Produced by Lonely Planet, "The Travel Book" has a double page colour spread on every "official" country in the world - that's 218 according to the United Nations by the way. Each entry usually has one large photograph and several smaller ones with good explanatory captions. As is typical of the Lonely Planet travel publications, the standard of photography is exceptional and the subject matter is a good mix of landscapes, buildings, people, and wildlife and plant ... One of my favourite Christmas presents last year was The Lonely Planet Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World. This books was created by Roz Hopkins with a lot of help from the lonely planet ‘team’ in respect to pictures and extracts. I am a big fan of Lonely Planet, I love their travel guides and I have found them immensely helpful in my travels around the globe. When I spotted this on display in Waterstones I was very excited and I was thrilled to receive it for Christmas. This book contains information on ALL of the countries in the world in alphabetical order, 230 entries in total. This list of countries comes from the ... Read the complete review

Wow - I love this book. It inspires, excites and occasionally humbles me! A journey through all of the 200 plus countries in the World will surely have the same affect on everyone. This book is my travel bible - I'd love to say that I'll visit every country in it before I get too old to lug my suitcase around Heathrow but this is a secret dream of mine. Oh well, 23 down, 180 to go....... Each 2 page spread contains useful information detailing when to go, what to see, what to do and how to really get under the skin of the country. these are all the experiences that make an excellent travellng experience. To cap it off are numerous photographs from the ... Read the complete review
