A dangerous man with questionable ethics, Merrick's actions soon start to make Parker think about his own personal life, having already lost one wife and a daughter to a murderer, and now with a second, estranged, wife and a second daughter. In many ways, this book explores elements of the human psyche that the other books do not. The writi...more

Crowned Review The Unquiet - John Connolly: Look out for the Hollw Men!! (608 words)
by - written on 11/08/09 (Very useful, 42 readings)
Rating:

The Unquiet is the sixth of John Connolly's books featuring the recurring lead character of private detective Charlie 'Bird' Parker. Previous books have seen his own personal storyline develop more than some of the recurring characters, but one ongoing theme is always that of a supernatural and gothic nature. Connolly manages to blend the regular crime thriller tale with a bit of a Stephen King type element with the sixth sense and shadows and lost souls floating about. He also manages to realise these elements into a character or two along the way. In The Unquiet, we see Parker approached by Rebecca Clay, who is being stalked and threatened by a man named ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dark, gritty and disturbing book (271 words)

Rating:

I have just finished reading this book and couldn't put it down. I've read several of John Connolly's Charlie Parker books and I never tire of the characters or the plots. John Connolly always writes with a fine line between the living and dead, there's an element of paranormal to all his books but unlike many authors who try this it doesn't overshadow the main story. His character Charlie Parker is a private detective who takes only select cases, he naturally has a troubled past and personal life to match. His two friends from New York, Louis and Angel, are regulars in Charlie Parker stories. Louis the dangerous hitman and Angel, his gay partner ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Unquiet - John Connolly: The Unquiet" Are Nicely Unsettling (592 words)
by - written on 06/05/08 (3 readings)
Rating:

This was my first book by John Connolly. I'm half way through another now, and his style is consistent. He seems to be one of the few authors that still know how to create a really unsettling atmosphere. The lead character in most of his books, Charlie Parker, is flawed as well as haunted by his own issues. He was a police man once, but has switched to being a private investigator. There is also his second wife and their daughter. Two other recurring characters are Charlie's back up team Angel and Louis. This book is one of the later ones of a whole series, but it is easy to understand on its own. In this story Parker is hired by a woman to find her father ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Welcome back Charlie Parker- as dark and macabre as always (949 words)
by - written on 31/08/07 (Very useful, 51 readings)
Rating:

Charlie Parker has had a very troubled life. His wife and daughter were both killed by a serial killer known as The Travelling Man and, in EVERY DEAD THING, Parker abandoned his career in the Police Department to track the killer down and exact upon him the full might of his vengeance. In doing so, he lost much of the respect of many former colleagues at the Department, who frowned upon the person Parker had become, and damaged more than a few former friendships. But worst of all, following an encounter with a Louisiana Vodoo-Witch woman who later passed over, Parker may or may not ( depending on what you choose to believe) have been touched by a gift; a gift that allows ...  Read the complete review

gripping, thrilling none!

Didn't cost much, The cover looks pretty good. Plot progresses poorly, Three narrators makes for messy reading.

Slickly written, interesting plot, good new character Some characters underdeveloped, slightly too long

Thrilling, intelligent Excessive detail

A clever story that spans over nearly a decade in it's entirety... Very bleak reading and not the nicest of stories...
