Francisco Manoel da Silva is a poor Brazilian who seeks his fortune by sailing to the Kingdom of Dahomey on the West coast of Africa (now Benin and Togo) to pursue a career as a slave trader. Although he does make a lot of money, his life is fraught with problems, including war and his relationship with the King of Dahomey, who decides to lock da Silva up when he gets bored with him. Fortunately, the King is deposed and his brother, with whom da Silva is close friends, takes over, which bodes well for da Silva's future career and he becomes a famous personage in the area, known as Ouidah.
