Devil May Care (James Bond) - Sebastian Faulks

Crowned Review Fleming's Bond returns. (1409 words)
by T4imbo3107 - written on 05/07/08 (Very useful, 195 readings)
Rating:

proposed to mark this event in the only way they knew how, and that was to release a Bond novel, but who would write it? Well respected author Sebastian Faulks, writer of Charlotte Gray and Birdsong received blessing from the Fleming family as the third author to write a Bond novel, but there were a number of provisos in doing so. Firstly it had to be a continuation of Fleming s original work within the Fleming timeline and not modern day, and secondly he had to write in the style of Fleming, and once you ve read this novel you ll see that the story oozes a number of Fleming trademarks. The year is 1967; Bond has been on a sabbatical for just over two months and ...

Devil May Care (James Bond) - Sebastian Faulks

Premium Review No Mr Bond, I Expect You to Die (552 words)
by mynameisrui - written on 08/07/08 (Very useful, 153 readings)
Rating:

out I thought I would give it a try. The interesting thing about the book is that it is the first Bond book not written by Ian Fleming. Instead, Sebastian Faulks has written it. However, Mr Faulks did apparently read all of the other Bond books written by Ian Fleming in order to get an idea of how he wrote the books so as to try and repeat it. I never read Ian Fleming s books so I can t really say how well it s written compared to the others. The book itself is set in 1967 and Bond has been on holiday for a while as ordered by M due to his recent encounter with Scaramanga (from The Man with the Golden Gun). Bond being Bond he can t sit and do nothing for too long but ...

Human Traces - Sebastian Faulks

Premium Review Not a beguiling comedy of manners (543 words)
by enchantingchap - written on 16/07/07 (Useful, 140 readings)
Rating:

This is a beautifully written book. As well as that, its depth of scholarship is, in so far as it clearly involved, inter alia, a great deal of research into the causes and symptoms of mental illness, quite remarkable for what is, after all, a fictional work. The story is about the lives of two men, both who, through their childhood experiences, are drawn and indeed impelled towards a career in medicine, in particular towards psychiatric medicine Their aim, essentially, is to find a cure for madness. This quest takes each of them on a long and, at times, despairing journey. But bear in mind that this is not a story about a pair of doctors in any modern sense. This is ...
