Advantages: Light and fluffy read
Disadvantages: Very little sense of time or place
The Viscount Who Loved Me is the second book in the series of 10 books detailing the romances of various members of the Bridgerton family. The series began with The Duke and I, and although this particular book can be read as a stand-alone story, if you want to know the background, I suggest you begin with The Duke and I.
Julia Quinn is an American writer and therefore has very little conception of how English is spoken in England, and especially in Regency England, which is when this story is set. However, if you're willing to overlook the glaring errors in language, lack of sense of time or place or historical detail etc, and just want to read a light and fluffy historical romance, then you will enjoy this book.
Synopsis: Anthony Bridgerton has been a viscount since he was 18, succeeding upon the death of his much loved father. Anthony thinks that because his father died early, he is also destined to die young and so he resolves to never fall in love and live fast! However, he needs to marry and produce an heir so he begins to woo Edwina but she has said she will not marry without her sister Kate's approval. Kate dislikes Anthony but he sets out to win her respect only to find he's falling for her rather than her sister!
If you are prepared to overlook the negatives already mentioned above, this is a very enjoyable love story and one quickly becomes involved with the Bridgerton family and the hero and heroine in particular. Anthony and Kate are likeable and after the usual rocky road to romance, as in all good romance novels, there is a very satisfying ending.
Despite my criticism, I have read all 10 books in this series and enjoyed them very much, just don't expect any gritty realism or historical accuracy. This is definitely more Hollywood than Regency England.
Summary: A satisfying romance.
