Premium Review Life could be a dream (298 words)
by Helix - written on 22/07/01 (Very useful, 61 readings)
Rating:

Probably best known for autobiographical novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit which was dramatized. Winterson has produced some first class fiction. The first novel of hers that I cam across was written on the body. A story of a passionate love affair narrated by a person of undeclared gender. Although she has never really been in the closet so to speak, please do not assume that she writes for a target lesbian audience. I have always found her books and emotional read. To me reading her prose is like is like experiencing a conscious dream. Her whole writing style from structure to semantics is beautiful. Usually writing in the first person she has a knack for drawing you ...

Premium Review Body Language (340 words)
by happybunny75 - written on 28/06/01 (Very useful, 66 readings)
Rating:

Take a genderless character, a love story; add some black humour and metaphorical biology , all written by Jeanette Winterson. The recipe of the above is Written on the Body, Winterson’s forth novel. A young Lothario (gender never revealed) hops from one bed to another, but without searching for anything in particular. Enter Louise, the wife of a Jewish doctor and our character’s life is turned upside down. Although Louise is dying. Winterson’s prose at this point in the narrative develops with the use of imagery “Her faithful biology depends on regulation but the white t-cells have turned bandit…Will you let me crawl inside you, ...

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson

Premium Review Oranges are not the only fruit - Jeanette Winterson (205 words)
by steve_frazer - written on 01/07/00 (Very useful, 281 readings)
Rating:

An enchanting love story Amazingly this is Jeanette Winterson’s first novel. It is like no other novel I’ve ever read. Unique and beautifully written with a style, structure, humour and message that may not suit every taste. I’d urge everyone to at least take a bite to see whether it is palatable though, as there is something for us all whether we like it or not. Religion and religious attitudes are challenged throughout and the hypocrisy of the church’s stance against homosexuality is a prominent thread. The heroine struggles with her homosexual feelings that conflict with the extremeness of the teachings from her evangelical mother, and ...
