"Curious things, habits. People themselves never knew they had them."

"One doesn't recognize the really important moments in one's life until it's too late."

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) is one of the worlds most successful authors ever. Her books are read in more than 100 countries and have been translated into 44 languages. In 1930 Agatha Christie married the archaeologist Max Mallowan and had accompanied him on all his excavations in the Middle East. She developed a love and fascination for the Middle eastern culture and way of life.
These travels and life on the archaeological sites she visited provided the inspiration and setting for several of her most popular books, like 'Murder on the Orient Express', 'Death on the Nile', 'Murder in Mesopotamia' and 'Appointment with Death'...

'They came to Baghdad' too was based on her experiences while at the archeological sites of Nineveh, Arpachiyah, Chagar Bazar and Tell Brak in Iraq, which provided much material for her novel.

Story of ' They Came To Baghdad '

Baghdad is the chosen location for a secret superpower summit.Unfortunately the word is out, and an underground organisation in the Middle East is plotting to sabotage the talks..

Into this explosive situation stumbles Victoria Jones, a girl with a yearning for adventure , she meets a young man Edward who is scheduled to leave very soon for Baghdad, and she decided to follow him.....while in Baghdad in search of Edward, she gets more than she bargained for when a wounded agent stumbles into her hotel room and dies on her bed.His final words to her before he died were 'Lucifer.....Basrah....Lefarge..' of course she could hardly make any sense of that. But she is truly trapped as she becomes the target of the organisation ..

My views about the book

This is a very entertaining book, keeps your interest through and through. The book has very colorful descriptions of Baghdad and its surroundings.
The main interest in this book is the characterisation of Victoria .She is utterly delightful, full of ideas some of them really wild and she has a knack for getting into trouble and out of it too!!!
Her search for Edward takes her through various adventures and the situations that hse comes across are quite funny and comical.Victoria is always able to get out of the various sticky situations with her quick thinking .
This has a very interesting climax and quite an unexpected one.
Another very interesting book for Agatha christie fans.

Summary: Highly entertaining and absorbing novel

Not one of my favourites, but it is definitely very different from her usual crime fiction!
