They Do It With Mirrors - Agatha Christie ... Vicarage was published in October 1930, little did the literary world realise that Agatha Christie, already famous for her early Poirot titles, was introducing a character who would become the best-loved female sleuth of all time. The 14 Marple books would appear at intervals over the next 49 years, with Miss Marple's Final Cases published in 1979, three years after Agatha's death. To mark the 75th anniversary of Miss Marple's first appearance, and to celebrate her renewed fortunes as a primetime television star, this collection of facsimile first editions will be the perfect way to enjoy these books in their original form - 12 novels and two short story collections. Reproducing the original typesetting and formats from the first editions from the Christie family's own archive copies, these books sport the original covers which have been painstakingly restored from the best available copies, reflecting five decades of iconic cover design.

Premium Review Where's the 'ummpth' Aggie?? (1690 words)
by idodoyou - written on 02/11/01 (Very useful, 167 readings)

up the ending. And literally speaking, been a total waste of time reading an Agatha Christie. Because, let's face it, isn't the biggest part of the thrill reading a Christie, the on going battle you have with yourself to see if you can actually name the culprit before she does? To see if you can just, not beat exactly, but to see if you 'stay' with Christie and her ingenuous criminal mind. Gwan with ya, you know that you?d like to beat her, just once? There aren't many Christie books that I haven't read. And I have to say; Hercule Poirot is my favourite character. Jane Marple just doesn?t cut it for me. Oh, don't get me wrong, she is ...

Murder On the Orient Express - Agatha Christie

Premium Review Murder on the Calais Coach! (1883 words)
by litefoot - written on 19/02/06 (Very useful, 2152 readings)
Rating:

Agatha Christie, that great writer of detective novels, was enjoying huge success during the 1930s. Her books were both incredibly popular and critically acclaimed, and the author was riding on the crest of a wave, writing some of the best work of her career, including the first Miss Marple stories, The Murder at the Vicarage (1930) and The Thirteen Problems (1932). After finishing a collection of short stories about the supernatural, titled The Hound of Death (1933), Christie turned her attentions towards her next book. Christie was a frequent traveller at the time, journeying around Europe with her husband who was an archaeologist. She had seen the famous European ...

Murder On the Orient Express - Agatha Christie

Premium Review One of the worst! (193 words)
by Rach2000 - written on 17/01/01 (Somewhat useful, 157 readings)
Rating:

I’m sorry to say but this is one of the worst Agatha Christie books I’ve read. It’s the most predictable Poirot story I’ve read and I actually got bored in the middle. Everyone knows the basic plot. A man is murdered on the Orient Express, which unfortunately runs into a snowdrift, leaving the murderer trapped on the train. The murderer also didn’t account for Hecule Poirot being on the train. The idea behind the plot is fairly clever but the way it’s written makes it somewhat predictable. The ‘red herrings’ are so obvious and I felt I knew who the killer was almost from the beginning. The best bit would have to be the ...
