Advantages: Rhyming text - lovely illustrations - fun story
Disadvantages: big too long for younger children
When I was a child I was bought Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose by Dr. Seuss for a birthday or Christmas present and I have always remembered it. When my daughter was born I went in search of the book and found it on www.ebay.co.uk and paid about £1.24 for it.
Thidwick is the story of a lovable Moose called Thidwick who just can't say no. He ends up almost being shot by hunters because of his unlimited kindness. Thidwick is a Moose with very big antlers and throughout the story various animals come and make their home in his antlers and even invite their friends and family to join them. It is time for Thidwick to move to new pastures but because of his guests he is unable to cross a river with the rest of his herd. His guests are very unkind to Thidwick and because he is such a kind hearted Moose he tries to keep them happy. It is once the hunters start chasing Thidwick that he remembers something very important and eventually escapes to join his family across the river.
The story is written is the lovely rhyming text that Dr Seuss is so famous for and because of this is fairly easy to read. The rhyming makes the book more amusing even though the story is quite good fun by itself. When I first tried to read the book as an adult I had to keep thinking about the rhythm but after a couple of pages it does tend to come naturally and the rest of the book is much easier to read.
I first tried to read the book to my daughter when she was about two but she was not interested and I think the book was perhaps too long and complicated for her at that age. My daughter is now almost six and Thidwick is now one of her favourite stories. I think the book is best suited to a child over five as it is quite a long story and younger children would lose interest.
Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose is currently available from www.amazon.co.uk for £3.99.
I would recommend Thidwick to anyone with Children aged about five as it is a lovely little story which has become a classic.
Summary: One of my favourite childhood stories
