Advantages: funny, well written, clever

Disadvantages: not easy to read in bed, none, none

Terry Pratchett's back at his most brilliant. Even non-Pratchett devotees will enjoy it. It's pure brain candy for the rest of us. Don’t read it on public transport. (You’ll start sniggering to yourself - even gently guffawing. This tends to make people assume you are not sane.)

Thief of Time plays with a wide range of concepts - from the nature of time to the soulless nature of quality control processes. (The latter is probably the closest you can get to a political act in the England of the past decade.) It is thought-provoking, engaging and almost unremittingly funny.

My favourite parts are in the monastery. These include:- bonsai mountains, a list of ludicrous martial arts the abbot who is reincarnated backwards, the zen of Mrs Cosmopolite’s stock of cliches, the time machinery that runs like a nuclear power station.

It’s a temptation to me quote bits, as you may end up doing to your friends and family. “Oh listen to this, this bit is good, no really good, well what about this bit.” I will resist the temptation because you know you are going to end up reading it yourself, if you have any sense.

It really is an excellent book.
