Advantages: Well written, Highly original and entertaining, Fantastic characters
Disadvantages: paperback isn't out yet as far as I know
I have just finished reading this book, and, as usual for a Discworld novel, the only thing that disappointed me was how quickly the story seemed to come to an end! I just can't get enough Pratchett! The book introduces us to the 'Monks of History' who control time by basically pinching it from one era where its not needed and using it in another where it is. Everything has been ticking along nicely (OK bad pun!) for a while until someone decides to build the world's first truly accurate clock, which ticks in time with the universe. This would cause diasastrous results, so some new characters, including Lobsang Ludd set out, helped by old characters such as Lu Tze, along with a sneaky bit of not quite interfering from one of my old favourites, Death, and some proper interfering from his granddaughter, Susan Sto Helit. As usual with a Pratchett book, there are constant not quite hidden jokes, for example about barmen from the continent of 'Fourecks', and smaller appearances by characters from earlier books, such as Nanny Ogg (she of hedgehog song fame!) This book is a 2001 hardback edition from Transworld Publishers, and has an RRP of 16.99, although I paid 11.25 including p&p from Amazon.co.uk, my first purchase with Dooyoo miles! If you have never read a Pratchett before, you could read this without any prior experience of the characters involved, and if you are already a Pratchett fan, get out and buy it, you won't be disappointed!

- 02/07/01 Good op- although Lu-Tze was also in Small Gods (hence numerous references to it). |
