Advantages: noisy and tactile book

Disadvantages: Did not hold my son's attention

I bought this book, from the library; that is my digger as I thought it was a book that had a combination of things to help hold the interest of my son. It is a relatively new book that was publishes in May 2009.

It is a board book that does seem quite sturdy. It does however have warning on the book that states it contains cell batteries which can be dangerous if swallowed so need to be aware of this particularly if you do have a child who tends to damage books

The book is more facts about diggers that and actual story. It slowly takes you through each part of the digger starting with the bucket. The bucket is made out of a spongy silver fabric which highlights the area been written about. On each component of the Digger it actually explains what they do so gives detailed understanding of how a digger works

It continues to follow this sequence by describing the arm, cab caterpillar tyres and each have a different texture and feel to them.

At the end of each page are the words "and it goes Brmmm." These words surround a button and when you push the button it plays a Digger engine sound.

The final page recaps on what parts have been examined throughout the book.

My opinion.

I did believe that if anything can hold my sons attention then this book could as he does love books with sounds, touchy feely books and like most little boys is a fan of anything to do with machines. It appears to teach more detailed information about diggers and though it has no story my son has other books about building sites that have no story and bore me senseless that he loves them anyway.
My experience however was quite different. He doesn't love the book not long enough to get through the whole book. Having seen him looking at the book it seems like there is actually too much going on he doesn't bother with the touchy feely bit as he likes pressing the button more and the descriptions of the items don't seem to hold any interest.

From my experience this book was a real flop although it has all the components to be a big hit. I do recommend trying to get this book from the library before buying as I wouldn't discount it due to my son's response but it is a lot of money to spend on a book if your child shows no interest.

It is currently available at Amazon for £8.99 which is £1 off the RRP.

Summary: My son did not appreciate this book

I find these Usborne books seem really great from an adults point of view but then kids don't seem bothered.
