Advantages: Beautiful photographs, simple but effective rhyming text

Disadvantages: --------------

My daughter received this in a Bookstart bag when my granddaughter was six months old and it's been a firm favourite ever since. This Little Baby by Sandra Lousanda is a 14 page board book especially for little babies and has a small amount of text for mum and dad (or Nanny-Joy!) to read to baby as well as a large picture of a baby on each page so your little one can flick through the book herself.

The text is in the form of a rhyme and my granddaughter is just one now and she laughs when I put emphasis on the rhyming words so I think this book definitely helps her to start understanding the ways in which language can be used. She also recognises some of the words in the book because it uses words that we use to her everyday - apart from the fact that we change the word 'Baby' to 'Ba-ba' on most pages! I love the fact that the rhymes are simply constructed and fun to read, the author really did have the babies in mind for this basic form of poetry and this shines through in the book.

The photographs of the babies in the book are beautiful. Of course all babies are beautiful, but these little ones have been captured in black and white with lovely expressions that you cannot help loving and cooing over while you're reading. My granddaughter particularly likes the photograph of the little boy on the front cover who is displaying a really welcoming smile to introduce you to the book and looks geninely happy with the smile reaching his eyes as well as his mouth.

There is a twist to this book, and I think you'll forgive me for giving away the ending, because the very last page has the rhyme:

"And this little baby is the one I love best" and instead of another beautiful baby shot there is a mirror for your little darling to see themselves and know they are the best baby in the world. I think this is a lovely touch to the book and my granddaughter will hold the book and look at herself for ages, and then turn the page to compare herself to the little girl on the previous page. It is lovely to watch her interacting with the babies in the book and pointing at their noses or ears as she's at an age now where I'm starting to teach her the names for things and I think this book is going to help us to get her recognising parts of the face.

Because this is a board book my granddaughter can happily hold it herself and play with it without fear of ripping the pages or creasing it. When she bites it (as she often does) the pages don't get soggy and I can tell this is a good quality book as the corners haven't started to disintigrate even though she likes to have a good chew of it sometimes when we're not looking! I have watched her opening the book and giggling to herself at the photos of the babies, she happily look at it alone for a good 15 minutes which I'm sure you'll agree is something special to get an active one year old sitting down quietly for so long! I love sitting watching her play with This Little Baby because she chuckles and gurgles the few words she knows to the babies and strokes their faces to say hello which I think is really sweet.

You can buy This Little Baby from Amazon for £3.59 if you didn't get a copy in your Book Start bag and I definitely think this is money well spent because your little one will enjoy this from 6 months old to I would say 2 years and perhaps longer if they decide to go back to it once they start reading. Thinking about it I would say This Little Baby would be ideal to show your child when they are starting to read because the words are easy to learn and they would still be young enough to be interested in the photographs of the babies.

Summary: A beautiful book for even the youngest of babies.
