Thomas & Friends Noisy Surprise Book
This was just one of many presents that Jack received from my Mum this year and it is one he absolutely loves. He is really into reading and I have found it difficult to read with his paper books as he often tried to reach out and scrunch up the pages. With board books of course he can't do this and this one is just like that.
Noisy Surprise is a board book with sound buttons that can be pressed to make all different noises relating to the pictures. Throughout the story when a sound effect is needed there will be a symbol relating to that of one of the buttons on the right hand side of the book this can be pressed easily to make the story itself really come to life.
The book is 10 hard board pages long and each of these pages is covered with a lovely brightly coloured picture and on top of this picture is a small box of writing with the pictures of the noise buttons scattered through the text.
The book has a fairly simple storyline but an enjoyable one none the less. The story tells of Thomas who is needed to pick up the farmers harvest from town. The fat controller tells Thomas exactly what he needs to do and off Thomas goes. It begins to rain on his journey and the farmers hurry load the harvest on to Thomas. On his return journey Thomas hears some very unusual sounds and when he returns to the fat controller at the station Thomas gets him to have a little look in the carriages. What he finds is a big surprise to both Thomas as the fat controller. A cat has crept out of the rain and into the dry of Thomas's carriage.
The story is simple and easy to follow with the symbols for the sounds in all the right places. The pages of course being board are easy for little fingers to turn and the buttons are large and easily set off. There are seven different buttons in all and these are, the "Peep Peep" that Thomas makes, a noise for the sun coming out, the sound of rain falling, the chug of the carriages, the clink of a squeaky coupling, the screech of stopping wheels and of course the purr of a little cat which is followed by some music.
The pictures are lovely as they are all bold and bright colours and there are so many of the. The sounds the buttons make are a little bit robotic but they are still not that bad. The book of course needs batteries for the sounds to be made and it did already come with battery included and they are not sounding on the way out yet. When they need replacing though they are long-life AG 13 button cell batteries so I don't know how easy it is to get hold of them!
On the back of the book it says that it is suitable for ages 18months + but I cant see why this is as Jack enjoys me reading it to his and he can even hold the book and occasional turn the right page (if not in the wrong direction). He isn't really able to press the buttons at the right time so I guess that is why they have put this age range onto it.
I am not sure how much Mum actually paid for this book but I have seen it various places at around the £7 mark which I think is very good for what you are actually getting. The book is super glossy and easy to wipe clean. The story is good and the pictures and brilliant. Jack enjoys the sounds the book makes and I think it will continue to be a firm favourite for a long time.
