Advantages: You can live the book-you are there

Disadvantages: Finishes all too quickly

Having read McCulloughs first novel,The Thorn Birds,I did read several subsequent books which did not surpass her first.Maybe because the Thorn Birds was so good and riveting I was always looking for her ultimate triumph.
So far that has not happened.
Thorn Birds is set in Australia in the early part of the century, and follows a familys disasters and triumphs.Nothing special in that you might say,but the themes and plots, twists and turns are what make it special.
I enjoyed the characterization more than anything.I find it difficult to finish a book it has to be said,I have to believe and live the characters in the book.
This book does it.I found it unputdownable, and missed it gravely when I had read the last page.
The TV series was a disaster, although perhaps that is being unkind for those unfortunate enough not to have read the book first.
Soon I must read the book again,it has been several years since I last read it,I do not think I will be disappointed the next time either.
