The term "meme" was first coined by Richard Dawkins in his classic book "The Selfish Gene". It refers to a self-propagating idea - a belief that by its very nature encourages its own adoption. Memetics is thus the study of such beliefs and the way in which they propagate; it is about "how ideas acquire people". Memetics proposes that beliefs are themselves subject to Darwinian natural selection and evolution in their fight for resources (believers).
