So you plod along to the Crime section of Waterstones, and are faced with a whole shelf of Agathas. Bit daunting isn’t it?! Agatha Christie was a thwarted mathematician - in her world, girls didn't have the same opportunity to go to university as they do now - and her logical, calculating mind is made apparent in the very clever puzzles with which she presents us. I would recommend Agatha Christie - especially pre 1960 - to anyone who is in need of a little brain exercise and an absorbing can't-put-the-book-down read. She can still misdirect while dropping hints and clues with the best of them. And that is the mark of a great crime author. To show you what has actually happened but then skillfully drawing ...
