When asked the other day to recall my favourite picture books as a child, The Tiger Who Came to Tea was in the list. I’m not sure why it stood out in my mind so much, but I chose to buy it and read it to my nephew as often as possible. As the title suggests, for some reason a Tiger comes to tea and then proceeds to eat everything in the house before drinking all the water in the tap! Kerr has managed to pick upon a child’s favourite subject –food- and combined it with a silly but enchanting tale. Many people will remember this book from their childhood and I recommend it to parents ... Read the complete review

dug out my old copy of The Tiger Who Came to Tea recently to see if it still appealed to the children of today and quite amazingly it did...........I say amazingly as I am proud to announce that this book was first published in 1968 so it's even older than me!! ~ The Story ~ Apologies if I spoil the plot but here goes: A little girl, Sophie sits down for tea with her Mummy when there's a knock at the door. Mum wonders who it could be as the milkman and grocery boy have already been (even I can't remember grocery boys!) and Daddy has a key for the door. So Sophie opens the door and is greeted by a big, furry, stripy ... Read the complete review

My children announced they no longer want a bedtime story recently. I was upset. I was very upset. I like the bed time story routine. It helps me convince myself I'm a proper mum, you know - an apple pie kind of Mum. Of course I'm not. I'm rather a failure on the domestic front - I can't cook, I forget to empty the hoover bag and I only iron it if it goes on the outside - er....I'll let you into a secret - I don't always iron it then either. But I like reading to them and I thought they liked me doing it. I sniffed. After a bit more talk I felt better. It wasn't the STORY bit they didn't want; it was the BEDTIME bit. ... The tiger that came to tea is an excellent story book for young children, it has been described as a modern classic and I would whole heartedly agree with this. I think it's definitely from toddler to 6 year old anything past this age I think that the story is too basic and simple. This is exactly where the book excels for the younger generation however. The story is about a little girl called Sophie and her mum who live in a house and whilst they are having afternoon tea a big furry stripey tiger comes knocking on their door! Of course mother invites the Tiger in for Tea, but he ends up eating all the food on the table, then the cupboard, then the pans off ... Read the complete review
