Advantages: superbly written, charming story, very appealing to young children

Disadvantages: none

The tiger who came to tea is a superb book written by Judith Kerr. I first had this read to me as a child over forty years ago and I now read it regularly to the Infant school children that I teach. I have never met a child who didn't love this story.

Let me tell you more about this story.

The title ?
The Tiger who came to tea.

The author ?
Judith Kerr ( this amazing author also wrote the series of Mog the cat books)

Who are the characters in the story ?
A little girl called Sophie
Sophie's Mum
A Tiger
Sophie's Dad

So, what's it about ?
Sophie and her Mum are at home having tea, when suddenly there is a knock at the door. They wonder who it can be. They work through the possibilities , the butcher, the delivery boy etc (this story was written a long time ago).

Who is at the door ?
It is a tiger

What do they do ?
They invite the tiger in for tea (as you would).

What happens ?
They have a nice time, but the tiger certainly has got an appetite, and he eats all the buns and all the sandwiches and drinks all the water in the tap and all daddy's beer.

And then ?
When tea is over the tiger goes home.
Daddy comes home from work to find there is no supper.
They go to a cafe for supper.

Extra twist ?
Walking along the road to the cafe they see a cat which looks alot like the tiger.

What happens at the end ?
Sophie and her Mum go to the shops and buy a big can of Tiger food, just in case the tiger ever went to tea again .....but he never did.

Who would love this book ?
Anyone from the age of three upwards.
It is a charming story which is full of appeal.
Children like stories about animals, and this one has a cat (for the girls) and a tiger(for the boys).
A good talking point is 'Do you think this really happened ?'

Should I buy this book ?
Yes, in my opinion this is in the top ten books of all time for young children.
It is superbly written by a top author.
The story is easy to follow
The pictures are delightful, well thought out and compliment the story.
The storyline is very appealing to young children - both girls and boys.

Any extra's ?
You can also get a tape/cd with the story on which is great to listen to, either as a bed time story or in the car. Or for slightly older children - age 5 - 7 years, it is good to listen to the story whilst using the book to read along to the cd. - a simple but effective tool to aid reading.

I give this story 10/10

Summary: 10/10, The perfect story for 3 - 6 year olds. Will be enjoyed over and over again
