Advantages: Fantastic book

Disadvantages: May get childs hopes up of a tiger visiting

The Tiger Who Came to Tea has to be of my favourite children's books ever. When I hear it mentioned or see a copy of it I don't think to myself 'hmmm, I remember that story from reading it as a child,' it actually takes me back to being a child! I can vividly remember being all tucked all warm and safe in bed with my mum reading it to me!

It was first published in 1968, was written by Judith Kerr and is quite frankly has one of the most bizarre storylines ever but I guess why it is so great! Apparently it was a story Judith Kerr made up for her young child after visiting a zoo so I suppose that kind of explains it.

The story goes that young Sophie and her mother when there is a knock at the door. When they answer it they discover it's a tiger(!?) of all things! Well he asks if he can come in for tea as tigers do and then proceeds to eat all of the tea, all the food in the house, drink all of Daddy's beer and all of the water out of the taps. Now how a drunk tiger that obviously had a huge appetite didn't decide to eat poor Sophie and her mother is beyond me!

The tiger then decides to leave (no doubt to ransack some other poor souls house) and Daddy comes home. Upon discovering what has happened he decides to take them to the supermarket to buy lots of food including some tiger food of course!

It all sounds very strange but I can guarantee that as a child I loved it, I guess I just saw a tiger as a lovely creature that would be fabulous to have as a dinner guest! My mother is a teacher and they still read this story to the children in her school so it is the kind of story that can cross generations.

There are many great illustrations included on every page detailing every step in the story with lots of stuff going on in the background.

I have also read that it has been adapted for stage! With music! Now that is something worth seeing!

The Tiger Who Came to Tea can be purchased from bookshops, from Amazon for £3.89 or check out your local library.

I used to read this, but I didn't know it was written by Judith Kerr! Have you ever read her 'When Hitler stole pink rabbit'? Another great book by her :)
