Advantages: Great illustrations, wonderful idea, brilliant use of simple language.
Disadvantages: none.
I recently moved into a new flat and, while cleaning out the cupboards, came across my very old copy of the tiger who to tea. Nostalgia overtook me, so I decided to sit down for a moment and have a quick read through of what was my favourite book as a young child.
It still holds charm even to its day. Capturing the imagination of children everywhere with its absurd but charming tale that only childrens books get away with, the tiger who came to tea charts the tale of a tiger who visits a young girl named Sophie one night for dinner. The language is simple and I remember reading along with my dad when he used to read it to me (gosh, at least sixteen years ago now, it's stuck with me that long) with that poetic rhythm that grabs childrens attention without being to demanding.
As the book progresses, the tiger manages to eat all the food in the house, as well as drinking all the water in the tap! After leaving, Sophie's father comes home to no food, whatever shall they do! But do not fear, for they go out to a cafe for dinner and eat some scrumptious food. They also buy some tiger food, just in case he ever plans on visiting again.
But he never does.
The story is accompnied by some wonderfully simple but effective illustrations done by the author, Judith Kerr. They really do add to the experience as a child and break up the text into small, bite-sized chunks for those young readers.
Other than that there is not really much to say. The Tiger who came to tea is widely considered a classic in young children's book, one that sumarises that wild imagination that we have when we are young, but also the simplicity and honesty we (hopefully) represent. A great book that I will never throw away!
Available on amazon as well as most good bookstores.
Summary: Read this to your child today!
