John Grisham, as most people probably know, is the highly successful author of a string of legal thrillers, many of which have been made into high-profile films – among the best known of which are The Firm and The Pelican Brief. Grisham, an ex-lawyer (no surprise there) is probably the best-known and most successful, though certainly not the only, exponent of this genre. However, his first novel, A Time to Kill, which was first published in 1989, did not originally attract that much attention. It wasn’t until the success of his second novel, The Firm - and the film starring Tom Cruise - that the first one gained a wider readership. A Time to Kill was also ... Read the complete review

A Time To Kill is a truly compelling novel, which takes you into the exciting and devastating world of a father striving for justice in a world that breed's hatred for his kind. When reading A Time To Kill; I discovered one of the most powerful paragraphs I have ever frequented; it shows the immense literature prowess of John Grisham. A Time To Kill is all about the reader's ability to imagine devastating and world-shaking events in their minds just from the written word. Imagine you are a bystander to the rape of a black ten-year-old child. Two young, white rednecks have beaten, urinated, raped and assaulted her; she no longer resembles the child she was moments ... A Time To Kill by John Grisham is a captivating novel that is almost impossible to put down. A true masterpiece by an excellent author. When this book was first released the response to it was luke warm. However upon the release of “The Firm” people began to appreciate Grisham’s work and suddenly “A Time to Kill” was in demand and was re-published as if it were a new book altogether. The books brings alive a sensitive issue about life and death, colour and creed and passion and beliefs. For the benefit of those that have not read this outstanding novel, the story is about a black man named Carl who takes the law ... Read the complete review

With my 200-opinion looming over at Ciao, I thought it was about time I started to edit a load of my old ops, well not edit as such, more like completely rewrite. So to follow up from my op the other day on The Pelican Brief I’ve decided to start this editing process with another of Grisham’s books. In fact I believe this was in fact the first novel he wrote. For anyone whose not aware of Grisham’s work he is an ex lawyer, who after writing a couple of successful novels decided to pack in his career as a lawyer and start writing books. The majority of his novels focus on poor, struggling Lawyers or Law Students and although that’s ... Read the complete review

A Time To Kill was the debut from John Grisham, and this was the book that made him decide whether to continue with a career in law, or to become a full time author. A lot of Grisham books are set in the deep south of America, as is this one. It is set in Mississippi, in a small town with a tight knit community. While running an errand, a 10 year old girl is brutally raped and savaged by two white men, known in that area as rednecks. They are captured, but the little girls father is not convinced justice will be done, so he deliberately goes out to shoot and kill and the two men. After this event, we are introduced to the main character, a ... Read the complete review
