To Have and Have Not - Ernest Hemmingway

Premium Review A guidebook for REAL men (666 words)
by yoho_ahoy2000 - written on 13/04/01 (Very useful, 834 readings)
Rating:

a kind of ethical guidebook for REAL men who kill in cold blood but love their Mum. This is a very serious book; it's not clear whether Ernest Hemingway had a sense of humour at all. There is clearly no room for laughter in Hemingway's image of the real man, so don't expect any jokes. All the same, I did smile now and then at just how incredibly stoical Harry becomes in the face of his crises. Ernest Hemingway is one of the most famous authors of the twentieth century, but his greatest (?) work, 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' is rather long - perhaps not the kind of thing you would want to embark on without knowing a little about what to expect. Premium Review Cat in the Rain - a formalistic interpretation (3239 words)
by MALU - written on 19/06/01 (Very useful, 6135 readings)
Rating:

When I studied English, I learned to interpret literature formalistically. This method convinced me then and it still convinces me now. As it might not be common knowledge what ‘formalistic interpretation’ means, I’d like to show you by guiding you through Hemingway’s Short Story ‘Cat in the Rain’. This opinion is not university stuff, no, I wrote it especially for you! Some readers will find their names included into the opinion. Why’s that? Where? What for? Have patience, my friends! You might be curious and scroll to the end, but you won’t understand much without reading the beginning and the middle, too. It is necessary ...

The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway

Premium Review The old man and the boring novel (173 words)
by moronboy - written on 23/08/00 (Somewhat useful, 129 readings)
Rating:

I would imagine that of all great twentieth century writers, Hemingway is the one most likely to be doomed to an unread future in the twenty-first century. The endless emphasis on masculinity, the spare, rather mannered prose, the obsession with manly pursuits like bull-fighting and fishing. The best Hemingway is a short story or piece of ...
