I must have read this book a zillion times and every time I get to learn a new lesson from it. It's not a very complicated book yet it's a multifaceted one. It exemplifies an array of sentiments while dealing with an immensely serious subject of racial inequality. But the best part is the tenderness and hilarity with which the author writes while pointing out severe prejudices.
This Pulitzer Prize winning book has been written by Harper Lee who was born in 1926, Monroeville Alabama. Her fascination in law made her become a law student as well as write many thought provoking articles concerning law, especially racial injustice. It's quite interesting to know that she took two and a half years to write this book. In a nutshell, this novel analytically fuses concerns of class, gender and ethnicity along with the capacity to empathize and have the nerve to face any consequences.

The entire story is in the form of a narrative. It very successfully blends a child's perspective with an adult's point of view. There has been an implementation of the flashback technique. A six year old girl, Scout Finch recounts her experiences with her brother and friend in her sleepy old town of MayComb, Alabama. The story takes place during the years of the Great Depression and is overflowing with a lot of upheavals. The little girl's father, Atticus Finch is a middle aged lawyer who does the unexpected act of defending a black man named Tom Robinson. This man is accused of raping a young white woman named Mayella Ewell. Atticus ascertains that the so called victim and her father are untruthful. But still the jury convicts the black man who is inevitably killed while trying to escape.

This is indeed a classic in spite of being contemporary American literature. It illustrates a lot of demonstrative intensity. It clearly brings to light how a writer should write. The main objective should be to write what he or she identifies with and should write about it honestly. For me the use of humor in a tragedy is an amazing fact. The fascination of the three children with Boo Radley has been described in an extremely comical yet sincere way. But the icing on the cake was the section where Scout is tempted badly to fist fight for her father's reputation.

I can say this truthfully that after reading this book I can identify with it. It is not only harping anti-racism slogans, the book beautifully expresses relationships, be it with a father, brother, friend or even the maid. For those who haven't read this book, I am telling you-"You are missing something"

Summary: to fight for truth and against injustice
