Advantages: Wonderful read

This classic book by Harper Lee is set during the depression and focuses on the lives of a family living in the south in a small rural town called Maycomb. The story is told by a young girl looking back over the events of about a year, the young girl nicknamed Scout is a bit of a tom boy and lives with her older brother Jem and her father Atticus who is a lawyer. Part of her being a tom boy maybe due to the lack of a mothers prescence after she died when Scout was born however the family have a black house keeper called Calpurnia.

This is a story about racial segregation and some ugly truths are bought home to both children when their father takes the case of a black man accused of raping a white woman. In a small town and at a time when blacks were seen as second class citizens this is a big issue especially as in the eyes of many of teh white population Atticus intends not just to represent the accused but to actually prove his innocence.

This is a wonedrful book to read, full of wonderful descriptive passages that flow from the page and help create a mental picture of a small rural town in the deep south. Having the story told through the innocen eyes of a young girl is an excellent means of highlighting the hypocracy and double standards that exists amongst the bigoted and racist characters in the book.

This is a very moving story that certainly has its low points but also has some lovely touches as the children explore their small town. There are masses of characters that are really interesting to discover and overall this is one book that should be read by everyone.

Summary: Great book
