Harper Lee - To Kill a Mockingbird
This is a classic novel which i happened to read as part of my GCSE english back in the day. It is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and was published in 1960, there is also a film based on the book aswell now; which i really enjoyed, any good book that is sucessfully turned into a film really intrigues me and i enjoy watching and reading them greatly.
In the beginning not much really happens apart from the mysterious character Boo Radley, however you are compelled to read on, the build up to the court case is brilliant and Harper Lee has been really effective in building up the dramatic tension throughout this novel.
The book is mainly about the character of Atticus Finch, however it is told through the eyes of his daughter. She has the writing abilities and perception of someone four times her age and this combined with her naivety furthers the emotional depth of this novel.
The storyline basically is about a young girl growing up in a racist world, but she is greatly helped/influenced by her fair, respectful humanist father. It has many other plot linesand one of the main key ones is the history of Boo Radley, and Atticus's defence of an innocent black man charged of raping a white girl.
A brilliant book, intellectual and satisfing; theres nothing better than a book looking at morals etc and this one is great for it.
Summary: Another brilliant read, if you love classic books this is for you.
