Overview --------------- Many turns ago, the planet of Pern was colonised by humans. Metal was scarce on this world, so the fuel for the diggers soon ran out, and these were thereafter cannibalised for parts, and after some time were forgotten. The ships that brought the first humans to Pern were abandoned and lost. Pern had an enemy - a neighbour planet that came to be called the "Red Star". Every 200 turns or so, the Red Star would pass fairly close to Pern on its elliptical path around their sun.
