When Bobbi Anderson tripped overa piece of metal in the woods behind her house, and decides to dig it up, she never dreamed just how long it would take her, and what would happen to her and all her friends before that piece of metal was out of the ground.

Helped first by her best friend, Jim Gardener, and gradually by the rest of the town, they dug...and dug...and dug. As they dug, they changed little by little. All except for one or two of them. Why did the metal object have no effect on these few? And why could no outsiders enter the town without becoming very very ill? And worst of all, where was Peter, Bobbi's faithful dog, and where had little David Brown disappear to?
