samueltyler Where the Hell Is Tuvalu? - Philip Ells: ... in London can be a bit daunting and a bit grim. This is the opinion I have as a Northerner who on occasion travels to the Capital on business. As a rule I try to avoid it as everyone seems a bit grumpy and they seem to have a sense of entitlement as if they travelled to London to become an Executive and are only working in this coffee stall until they get their big break. Up North most people are happy to hav...

Dinah93 Eyewitness Travel Guides: Japan - John Benson
... re planning to go on holiday to Japan in 2011, and so have purchased a few books in advance to help us plan our trip. I ve purchased Dorling Kindersley books for years, and always found them reliable and thorough. The book is listed on Amazon as a hardback, however it s actually a very sturdy paperback. The cover is glossy and thick, and not easily damaged. This makes it excellent for taking around in your bag while travelling. What I am staggered by is the weight of the book though, despite being only slightly bigger than a paperback and 416 pages, it s as heavy as the average hard backed cook book. This guide covers the major cities and areas in Japan, and the be...

Templar19 The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures - Louis Theroux
... 1998 and 2000 broadcaster Louis Theroux hosted three TV series that focused on certain individuals on the fringes of society (U.S. society, mainly), and in particular on their bizarre beliefs and lifestyles. The series were called Louis Theroux s Weird Weekends and the individuals featured ranged from paranoid White-Power survivalists to aspiring porn stars, from UFO obsessives to charismatic snake-oil salesmen. Throughout the series Theroux dealt with his subjects in a detached and sympathetic way - acting as a sort of grimly-fascinated Englishman abroad, much as the urbane Alan Whicker had done in the 1960s and 70s - and once the series were over he tried to kee...

sympatic Bill Bryson's African Diary - Bill Bryson
... Bryson writes some excellent travel books and his American outlook on things is always fascinating although to be honest he is rather more open minded than many of his fellow citizens from across the Atlantic and he has an easy going style of writing that when you read his work you feel like he is in the room talking to you over a cup of tea. Published in 2002 this book tells of his experiences in Kenya as a guest of the charity organisation CARE. In fact the book itself supports the charity as all the proceeds from itssale go to the charity. Having said that it is a rather short book at only 63 pages however he still manages to both entertain and inform he reader ...
