bruffyboy Down Under - Bill Bryson: ... is Bill Bryson s travel book about Australia. Bryson is a comic travel writer who is characterised by being very easy to read. I came to this book having read 4 or 5 other works from the author, which I enjoyed tremendously. Bryson is a very funny and likable guy, who often gets into bizarre mix-ups and scrapes that lead you to like him and laugh at him at the same time. However, this book is not so funny. The...

bruffyboy Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
... for a Small Island is a travel book in which comic travel writer Bill Bryson travels around the UK. Although Bryson is American he has lived in the UK before, so it s an interesting book in which Bryson is only quasi traveler. Well I have read a bunch of Bryson s books and I have to say this is probably the funniest. I never know quite whether or not to believe the stories he tells, but either way this is a really funny book, The mix-ups he gets into, the bizarre people he meets- it s a laugh a minute. As a British reader I found it doubley funny to see how Bryson perceived our own country-men, and to be honest he is dead on. We really are a bizarre bunch, and the...

MALU Schlepping Through the Alps - Sam Apple
... the dictionary: also: schlepp, shlep, shlepp. American slang 1. to carry, to lug something 2. to move slowly, awkwardly, or tediously Origin: (1920-25), from German schleppen via Yiddish. Yiddish shlepn: to pull, drag The title together with the cover showing a sheep with a pipe* in its mouth suggest that an American Jew schleps sheep through the Alps, a European mountain range. Why would he do that? The book belongs to the genre travelogue, it s a biographical account of a trip interspersed with reflections on history and politics. The subheading clarifies what the author s concern is: My Search for Austria s Jewish Past With Its Last Wandering Shepherd. By cha...

nottellingu Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
... possibly one of the funniest travel books ever written, namely because every word Bryson writes is exactly on-point - usually embarrassingly so! Having lived in Britain for around 2 decades, Bryson is about to return to his native United States, but not before travelling the length and breadth of the United Kingdom...by public transport. Bryson begins his farewell tour in the same way he first entered the UK all those years ago, by catching a ferry from Calais to Dover, before making use of various transport methods to carry him from one end of the country to another: train, bus, taxi, boat, and the occasional sneaky rental car. Visiting most major cities - as w...
