I'm a great fan of John Irving's work, but I though the stories contained herein were a little weak compared with his novels, with the exception of The Pension Grillparzer - a true masterpiece. Unfortunately this story also appears in the World According to Garp, which I would imagine anybody considering buying this book already owns (and if they don't, they should). I'd only recommend this book if you have read all of John Irving’s other output and still want more; but having said that, he's still a fine writer, very accessible and more rewarding than most other contemporary authors. ...
