Natalie has to move with her family to a new hotel, it is there that she meets Tulip, a strange girl who seems like a loner. Tulip is hardly ever at school, and seems fiercely wild; shy Natalie builds a friendship with her that serves many purposes, not all of them healthy. Tulip likes to play games, and some of them are stretching the word 'fun' to its limits. This story is told in the first person, in the past tense, so it is intense narrative. There have been few books that have been so bad that I actually had to stop half-way, and this was one of them. The whole book seems to be lacking in any sort of suspense or story-line. I found myself flicking through the last pages just to see if the story does improve, and it doesn't. Anne Fine has indeed written many good books but this is not one of them. This book was about a girl who made friends with another girl who was generally seen as a bad sort. They ended up playing a game which involved doing dangerous stuff and the “good” girls parents disapproved of their friendship. This book seeks to explore friendships which people say are bad for you but doesn’t really mange it successfully. Anne Fine is a great children’s author but this time she has fallen short of the mark. If you want an Anne Fine book to read skip this and read the Flour Babies instead. ... Read the complete review
