The set of books is about a boy called Darren Shan who becomes a vampires assistant and the books follow his life. Shan has written over 10 books about the saga of Darren Shanand all follow on from the last.
Outline of story so far.
Well in the first book it introduces you to the character of Darren. Darren is quite a normal boy with some normal friends. Darren though loves spiders and likes to keep them in his bedroom with him (Wierdo). Darren has about four close friends but his best friend is a boy called Steve leonard.
Darren and steve get two tickets to a sought of freak show circus but this circus is actually real and by real I mean that the wolf man is actually a wolf man. When a performer by the name of Mr Crepsley performs on stage with his massive pet spider. Mr Crepsley makes the spider do some wierd stuff with his mind like jump in and out of his mouth. Darren and Steve are amazed in different ways. Darren becuase he can't believe what the spider can do and wishes he could have a spider like it. Steve though is amazed as he recognizes Mr Crepsley from a book he read and remembers that he is vampire. After the show Steve waits behind and asks Darren to go home without him. Darren though decides to wait behind and sneaks up to the top balcony to watch what happens. Steve is waiting when Mr Crepsley comes out of nowhere. Steve asks him if he can become his assistant. The vampire agrees and they he begins to make Steve his assistant. To make a human a vampire you have to put vampiric blood into that human. Doing so Mr Crepsley realizes that Steve bad blood adn that somewhere inside him there is a evil. Steve leaves angry.
The next couple of days Darren really badly wants a spider like Mr Crepsleys so he decides that he will go and steal the vampires pet. He does but Mr Crepsley nows he took it. One day after school Steve goes back to Darrens bedrrom and he is bitten by the spider. The spiders poison is different then any the doctors have ever seen. Darren knows that the only way Steve will survive is if Darren goes to Mr Crepsley and asks for the antidote. He does but Mr Crepsley says to Darren that he will only give him the antidote if Darren becomes his assistant. After a while Darren agrees but only because he wants to help Steve.
Steve survives, Darren and Mr Crepsley have to fake Darrens death as it is unsafe for Darren to be near his family as a half vampire as he still has the craving for blood. Steve though swears revenge on Darren as he believes that Darren told Mr crepsley to say that he had bad blood.
Outline of Tunnels of Blood
The story follows on from where the story left off. This time Darren and Mr Crepsley have to go to Mr Crepsley home town as there is an evil vampaneze ( vampires evil brothers). Vampires don't kill when they feed they just take a small amout of blood and the person survives but the vampaneze drain the person dry. The vampaneze in Mr Crepsleys home town is called Murlough and is killing and drinking people for fun. Mr Crepsley takes it into his own hands and trys to stop him. Mr Crepsley use to be a vampire General but as he is not any more it is okay for him to try and stop Murlough. If he was still a vampire gerenal then it would be an act of war to go after the vampaneze.
Darrren in this book finds a girlfriend by the name of Debbie. Debbie doesn't know that Darren is a vampire and Darren doesn't tell her.
Mr Crepsley acts differently to normal and Darren at first doesn't really care but when the news says that corpses have been discovered he believes that Mr Crepsley is behind it. Darren can't belive that Crepsley would do such a thing so he and his sanke man friend evra try and catch the vampire in the act. What they don't know is that when Crepsley goes out he is trying to hunt down the vampaneze Murlough. Darren stops Mr Crepsley from killing Murlough as he believes that Murlough is a human but after he sees Murloughs face he realizes he isn't.
Murlough swears revenge, I won't say what happens next in the book as I wouldn't want to ruin it but it is good.
What I thought of the book.
I really enjoyed the Tunnels of Blood as I did with the first two and the rest of them. The tunnels of blood is a great follow on and even if you haven't read the first two its quite easy to follow on as there is an introduction that tells you roughly the story so far.
This one has alot more suspense then the first two which is nice as it puts you more on edge. Alot more twists and turns then the first one especially at the end. At first I couldn't believe what I was reading but after I read it again I did.
The Darren Saga are the best books and a nice thing is that they can be read to tenns and adults.
I give this book a solid 9 out of 10.
Summary: What a great book
