Annoying characters but great story (Twilight - Stephenie Meyer)
Member Name: MrsLim
Advantages: Great story Disadvantages: Sexist characters which can be annoying and lots of mistakes in the prose! The book is short enough to be picked up on a whim for a quick read. The story of a unconventional vampire living with his vegetarian family, stuck at the age of 17 (but really aged 108) and falls in love with a clumsy, not beautiful 17 year old, is for all intents and purposes compelling. Unfortunately, I found the flaws in Meyer's writing really hard to ignore. It is shame that this book seemed to have been published by the publishers at a rush - without properly checking for typos and grammatical mistakes. This book is littered with mistakes which I find really annoying and interrupts my flow during the read. The story itself grated on me, with Edward becoming more and more obnoxious (although, if you read the never to be published, Midnight Sun, from Meyer's website which tells the story of Twilight from Edwards point of view, his character's obnoxious and sexist tract is slightly diminished because you start understanding where he is coming from). Bella becomes more pathetic towards the end, giving a really false sense of what it feels like to fall in love (what's with all the dizzy spells??). However, as a book, it is a great story so if you can ignore the mistakes and annoying characters, read the whole saga and watch the films. Summary: Great story but can be annoying! |
