Advantages: it won't freak out your daughter

Disadvantages: your son will want to put a stake through it

I just glanced through a few reviews for this book and felt compelled to write this.

I never knew about this series until the movie came out and the billboards caught my eye. Then on holiday I found a copy of Twilight lying beside an empty sun bed. So I lifted it. Apologies if you hadn't finished reading it.

This book has a great premise and being a love of all things nocturnal I thought I'd see what I was missing. I'm about 50 pages before the end and I am still looking. I will finish the book but I can't help thinking that I am the only one who can't find the story. With the exception of the truck crash scene most of the action takes place of the page. Now it is written in the first person but I like a bit more action. It reads like a teenage hazy diary would if the teenager had a crush. Which the main character does.

The story revolves around a girl who moves to live with her Dad in a small backwater town. When she starts school she falls hopelessly in love with Edward. The impossibly beautiful, rich, smart, clever vampire. If I had a stake I'd finish him off. His only redeeming factor is that he has a very dry sense of humour which pushes the scenes with these two along.

The book is aimed at the female teenage market and I think it's an attempt to slay Harry Potter. To say nothing happens would be too harsh, it just doesn't happen to our heroine. She seems oblivious of what is happening and what people say. But then she is a loved up little puppy. Aside from these two characters the only one worth a mention really is Alice. She is another vampire with a past that gets a little clearer near the end.

The writing is that of a teenager with a 35 year old head on and you can't help thinking that had the book entered the bloodlust side more it would appeal to a wider audience.

All in it's not the best, nor indeed the worst book written. I will get a copy of the DVD just to see how it shapes up but doubt if I will read the other three books in the series.

Summary: it was fine for a freebie, but if you want my copy I send it to you.
