Advantages: Good characterisation, enjoyable read
Disadvantages: None for me
I am a big fan of Jill Mansell's books so I was pleased to pick this up at my local library.
The Plot and Characters
Radio presenter Cassie and journalist Jack have the "perfect" marriage and family life, or so Cassie thinks until glamourous journalist Imogen comes to interview her. As Jack and Imogen grow ever closer, Cassie's life starts to crumble around her as she struggles to deal with the aftermath of Jack's actions.
Meanwhile, their children also have problems of their own. Comedian Sean finds his life turning upside down after getting involved with Pandora; student Sophie has her heart set on a) getting her father away from Imogen, and b) going to Africa as a charity worker. Model Cleo finds herself on the modelling assignment from hell in Venice.
As the story progresses, I found myself feeling increasingly sorry for Cassie as she struggles to deal with the public knowing all about Jack's behaviour. Jack seems genuinely torn, which makes him appear less of a villain. I couldn't take to Imogen at all, as she seemed too selfish and irresponsible to redeem herself.
In terms of the more peripheral characters, I couldn't warm to Sean at all and couldn't help but feel that he got his just desserts at the end (or so it seemed). Cleo's friend Linda seemd very wet and drippy, which I found quite annoying.
Towards the end, it seemed that the ending would be utterly predictable but I was glad to see a bit of a twist added in for a few characters.
My Overall Verdict
I really enjoyed reading this book. Although the plot doesn't sound too thrilling when described, the book wasn't boring as there was quite a lot of characterisation to either draw you into characters or turn you against them. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you have enjoyed any of Jill Mansell's previous books.
Summary: An enjoyable read from Jill Mansell
