Advantages: Save money and expand your range of exercises.
Disadvantages: If you do not know the basics, you could hurt yourself.
I bought this book because, after weeks of going to Kettlercise, I started to feel a bit extravagant and rather silly. Why am I forking out £4 each week, plus petrol, to carry out exercises I should be able to do at home? The range of exercises I know, however, is limited to those I carried out in the classes, and my memory is not brilliant. I figured the book would be both an aide-memoir and an inspiration. I wasn't wrong.
The range of exercises included far exceeds what I've been exposed to. More importantly, the exercises are grouped as progressions - so you can start with the easier versions, and progress to more difficult ones as you get better. They also include programmes for people at different levels, and wanting to work on different aspects of their fitness (e.g. general conditioning, strength) or those wanting to use the bells to improve at a particular sport.
I was a bit worried about learning how to carry out ballistic exercises without being properly shown how to. However, the photographic explanations are very thorough. Personally I would be very wary of picking up this book and embarking on an exercise programme without some prior professional coaching, though. This is not because the book is of poor quality, but because of the risk of injury inherent in kettlebell workouts. If you do not know how to carry out the basic exercises with good form, you could do some serious damage.
All in all, this book is going to save me a fortune as well as make my training more targeted to my needs. After all, when you go to a structured class, you carry out a routine that is not designed for you. With the information provided in this book, I can make my own routine to suit my needs precisely. Ten out of ten from me.
Summary: Worth it - but potentially risky for absolute beginners.
