This book is brilliant if you want a excellent and comprehensive book on an Understanding disability policies . I first used this book to complete a project on social polcies and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book. This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like disability GNVQ in health and social care. (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on). Back to the book. Details about this book:- Title: Understanding Disability Policies Author: - Robert F Drake Published By: - Palgrave Macmillan Published on: - 5th March 1999 ISBN: - 0-333-72427-5 Priced: - £15.99 There are three sections in this book which are:- The meaning of disability and the creation of policy Disability Policy, models and development Policy outcomes and disabled peoples responses The meaning of disability and the creation of policy This is the first section of the book and it provides an excellent definition of the word disability. This section of the book explores the personal tragedy model, the social model of disability and also what is policy and how is it made? This section of the book is very useful for “Disability policy and practice ”, “Law” and also “Disability issues ”. This chapter of the book also takes ethics, religion and genetics into account when making social policy. Disability Policy, models and development This is the second section of the book and it provides excellent information into the spectrum of approaches to disability policy, this includes negative policies, the laissez-faire policy model, and the piece segmental policy and also the social rights based poli
cy model. I personally found the chapter on the development of disability politics’ very useful for the “Disability policy and practice ”. This section of the book also has a chapter on the more contemporary disability policies in the UK such as health, employment and also transport. Policy outcomes and disabled peoples responses This is the concluding part of this book and it focuses on what the social policies outcomes and the responses from disabled people. This section of the book focuses a lot on what are social class and the impact of disability policies on these. I personally found the gender and disability section of this book very useful because it discusses the differential treatment between men and women in regards to social policy. Other subjects that are tackled in this section of the book are:- Minority ethic communities and disability Age and disability and also Disabled people and the policy process In this book there are lots of references to good disability writers such as:- Len Barton, Jenny Morris, Mike Oliver and also Tom Shakespeare. The one thing that is good about this book is that it incorporates Wales and mid Glamorgan a lot within this book, which makes it more realistic for me as i live in wales. This book is written by Robert Drake who is a lecturer in social policy at the University of Wales, Swansea and he is an associate lecturer with the Open University.
