Startide Rising, the second book in the Uplift Trilogy, is the first Brin book I ever read. It then proceeded to drag me kicking and screaming back to the library to find some more, unfortunately for me there were none, and I had to buy some, but that's libraries for you. Like the previous novel in the series (Sundiver - of which I have also written a review. Hint.) it works well as a stand alone novel, though I would reccomend reading all three, which gives the whole series a broader sweep.
