Usbornes Farmyard Tales are a series of twenty short stories featuring Mr and Mrs Boot, their children Poppy and Sam and a dog called Rusty who all live and work at Apple Tree Farm. Each book is packed full of colourful pictures allowing toddlers to follow the story without needing to read. Within each page is hidden a cheerful little yellow duck to encourage younger readers to study the detail and find the duck. There is also a simplistic sentence in large type at the top of each page for beginner readers and a longer sentence at the bottom of each page for more confident readers or parents to read. 'The Silly Sheepdog' by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright is one of twenty titles in the Usborne Farmyard Tales mini edition series. All of the stories revolve around Apple Tree Farm and the family that live there; Mr and Mrs Boot, Poppy and Sam and their dog Rusty. In each book the children have an adventure joined by the rest of the family or some of the other characters who live in the village. In this story we are introduced to Patch the dog. Patch has been bought by Ted who works on the farm. Poppy and Sam introduce Patch to the different animals on the farm and he scares the chickens and worries the pigs.
