This book is the second of twelve books in the Saga of Darren Shan. The series of books about vampires, with the author as the main character, who is a boy of about twelve years old. The book opens with Darren and his vampire keeper Mr Crepsley preying on a Scout leader as he walks home in the dark. Mr Crepsley knocked the man out with his breath, then cut his leg where there was a vein and drank his blood, Darren refused to have any, Mr Crepsley then healed the cut. The man would live, as Mr Crepsley only drank what he needed. Darren, at his point in the story will only drink animal blood, not human, even though he has been told that he needs to drink human ...

This is the second book in the Saga of Darren Shan series and it continues the success of the first book with its unique story of vampires told from the authors point of view. After the events of the firsr book Darren is working with Mr. Crepsley with the freak show as it travels around the country. After leaving his family and best friends behind Darren is no longer a schoolboy worried about homework, but a vampire who is trying to resist what he needs to stay alive. The second book in the Shan Saga and its still going strong. If you have not read cirque du freak please read my review on that before this review as there ay be spoilers! We rejoin Darren after the events of the first book. From being a normal boy he is now a half vampire. With his new teacher Mr. Crepsley he is struggling to make friends as he musnt alert others to what he is. Ultimately he return to the Crque du freak where he can be himself among those who know of what he! there he makes friends with a snake boy and a boy named Sam.
