Last Summer, I did the standard "stocking up on big thick magazines that might last me a fraction of my 3 months stay" thing before going away to Vienna. One of the magazines I bought was Company, and being the summer issue it came with a free beach novel, Venus Envy. I wasn't that impressed by the blurb on the back, but never being one to throw books away, I stashed it neatly on a shelf for a while. Fast forward 5 months and we've popped home for a family party. Beaches and trashy novels. Why, they go hand in hand just like peaches and cream, pen and paper, me and a Jaguar XK8... Oops! Drifted off into dreamworld again! Well my point is that when you are lazing on the beach, with a fair sized hangover and a restless nature you need a book. Not just any old book though! Something easygoing, that keeps your interest and preferably is quite amusing. Louise Bagshawe has the fine art of writing acceptable (and in this case outstanding) beach book down to a tee.
