Advantages: romantic and funny, a good description of teenagers' feelings

Disadvantages: a little expensive

Video Girl Ai is a manga by Masakazu Katsura, a very famous japanese manga author, it consists 15 volumes, first published by Shueisha between 1990 and 1993. It was a successful series, romantic and funny, a realistic description of teenager’s feeligns and lifestyles, and it was translated into English, Chinese, Italian and French.

An anime was released in 1992 in the form of 6 Original Animation Video, each of which is roughly half hour long, it is based on the manga story but it has significant changes at the end for the purpose of a more dramatic ending.


THE STORY

Youta Moteuchi is 16 years old boy living in Tokyo. His father travels the world and his mother was died, so he is alone at home most of the time. At school, he is very unpopular and his friends call him "motenai", that is one of possible reading of the ideogram of his surname, that means “without girls”.
One day, Youta enters Gokuraku's video rental shop and found a video tape, on the cover there are the picture of a pretty girl and a line “I’ll help you”; he rents the video tape, goes at home and put it into his video player. The pretty girl appears in his TV, she tell that she is Ai Amano, and she can help him and comes out from the TV. Youta is very surprised: a real girl came out from that video tape!… but that is a problem: his video player was broken and the nature of the girl will be very different from the original one. A new life begins for Youta, Ai lives in his home , attends his sama school and tries to help him in his love problems.

CHARACTERS

Ai Amano
She is a Video Girl with a purpose to help people who have any problem with their love life. She was created without feelings, only the need to pleases her partner, but because of the accident caused by Youta broken Video, she has feelings like a normal girl.

Youta Moteuchi
He is just an ordinary unpopular high sch
ool student, in love with Moemi a student of his school. He looks like a complete idiot, but he is a very brave and gentle person, he will do anything to save the one he love. His only problem is that he can't say "no" to a girl and he’ll had many troubles because of this.

Moemi Hayakawa
She's very kind, nice and gentle girl and a good cooker. She is interested in Youta personality, but she is not sure if it is a love or not, and she seems feel hesitation whenever she want to express her feelings to him.


Takashi Niimai
At first he was Youta best friends and he encouraged Youta to express his love to Moemi, but it seems that he doesn't aware that he was the one that moemi love, until it's to late.

Rolex
He is the creator of Video Girls and for whatever reason he denied the existence of love. I can't say much about him because I’ll tell you.

Natsumi
She was a Youta childhood friend, she moved many years ago. They meet again when she was looking for her lost boyfriend, a singer. She is a strong girl and she help Youta a lot. She has a problem with her heart condition.
