Alfred Wainwright started to write these guides just for his own use but they have become the bible for walkers in the Lake District. Now these pictorial guides should not really be used as maps even though I have seen some people doing just that. These guides are for you to plan your routes out or even just to read. There is so much information in these books you find yourself just looking at the maps that were hand drawn in so much detail. Some people I know have two copies of these pictorial guides, one to take with them walking and one to keep at home on the bookshelf. The Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells were written by A. Wainwright between 1955 and 1966. Originally published by Henry Marshall and printed by the Westmorland Gazette, they were later published by Michael Joseph and then by Frances Lincoln. Wainwright, who came originally from Blackburn, moved to Kendal in 1941, and almost immediately fell in love with the landscape of the Lake District. When he was 45 years old, he made a decision that was to shape the rest of his life - to make a detailed walker's guide to every fell in Lakeland.
