We are a watery nation, there is no denying it. Even without the swirling floodwaters of recent times, this island of ours is dotted and crossed with water of every description, from barely-liquid bogs to the swiftest of white water; from the natural beauty of the Lake District to the serendipitous creation of the Norfolk Broads; and from the ancient engineering of the Fens to the more recent and widespread creation of canals and millponds.
