We're Going on a Bear Hunt (Story Book & DVD) - Michael Rosen

This is my 3 year old son's favourite book. Its the one he begs me for most nights and he never tires of it. This is due to the excellent imaginative writing of Michael Rosen. He was one of my favourite writers when I was a child so to now hear my own son reading his books is an amazing feeling. Going on a bear Hunt is based around a father and his three children and dog going on a bear hunt, on the way they encounter grass, mud, rivers, snowstorms...the repetitiveness of some lines means my son picked up the words very quickly and could recite the book cover to cover after only hearing me read it 10 times or so. This book first came to my attention when my son was in nursery a few weeks ago, and the teacher had asked the parents to come and see our children reading us a story! It was this book. None of the children actually read the book because they are all 3yrs old, but the teacher did an amazing job in really exagerrating the words. The language in the book is quite simple, but if parents read it through with their children and act out some of the parts (like squelching through the mud!) the children start to learn the different noises in nature, without actually realising that they are learning. We're going on a bear hunt is a great book for young readers. Whether reading to one child or a class of children the story allows you to share an exciting journey, with simple repetitive phrases that young children, even non-readers can join in with. The DVD supplements the story well, bringing the characters to life. Children can independently recall what they've read and gain confidence as they read aloud alongside the DVD.
