Advantages: Will fit in your suitcase for holidays

Disadvantages: Not for those who are not open to persuasion

I have had three copies of this book - count them 3!

The first copy came from my brother, who is his adolescent years took all the tried and tested routes to flout parental guidance, buying gory horrorbook after gory horrbook.

Weaveworld found its way into my hands on a wet Sunday afternoon back in 1989, and from the first page, I found I could not let go.

The simplicity of the story's setting in a back street in Liverpool draws the reader in, involving us in Cal's daily life - his humdrum job, his father's obsession with racing pigeons, Cal's own childhood fascination with the train timetables he memorised with the track at the end of the garden.

Barker's innate insight in to normal life is embellished with words which bring the story to life, painting exquisite pictures for the mind's eye, drawing the reader into the story, making them live in the pages of the book following Cal and Suzanna's relationship on their adventures.

My second copy was from a dear friend in the spring of 1992, as my brother had then left home, taking his copy with him. The second copy was hard back, with lovely illustrations, and accompanied me on my first visit to America, for a year, and kept me mindful of what I was missing at home.

The third copy was purchased in Amercia when I went back to work in Texas in 1996, which is now well-worn and well-thumbed, and yet it gives me the same pleasure it did over 11 years ago.

This book shows itself in different colours every time you read it, and I would most certainly have it with me on a desert island to read over and over again.

I've always thought one record and eight books would have been better, but not better radio I suppose!
