As the title may suggest, “Web Design in a Nutshell” is a one-stop shop for designing a web site. It’s not really a tutorial book as such, and some experience or knowledge (albeit very little) is required before you will get the best out of the book. If you wish, you can read it as a tutorial book, and although not written to be such a thing, can actually be quite useful. Some pieces of it are interesting reading, and some just aren’t meant to be read in the traditional manner (more on this later). I first became aware of this book because it’s a required textbook for a multimedia course I’m studying at university. ... Read the complete review

I swear by this book; it lives permanently by my computer and is getting increasingly dog-eared. Rather than trying to teach about general design principles, Jennifer Niederst concentrates on the basic elements of writing good html and other web technologies at a simple level. The book is well defined into chapters which makes it easier to flag the sections you will refer to regularly. CSS, Javascript, and SSI each get their own chapters, and technologies such as Flash and XML are covered in the emerging technologies chapter. There is also good information about the way different browsers and operating systems render pages and the usable sizes of ... Read the complete review

This series of books are exactly what I have been looking for! The nutshell series covers many different aspects of the web and internet. The book I recently purchased is "Web design in a nutshell". This book was a breath of freshair to me. As a programmer and IT nut I wanted a good solid framework to use as both reference and guide for my web authoring and web building. This book gives out so many little tips and great idea's it sent my head buzzing. The referance charts and do's /dont's section is excellent. The book can be used by both newbies and proffesional web design people and its at a really nice price! ... Read the complete review

I bought this book last year when I was relying on templates, provided with free webspace to build my website and it has really changed my outlook on Web Design. It is a very reader-friendly book and includes everything you need to know about basic or intermediate Web Design in a .....nutshell! Although I originaly read the book from cover to cover, I find it invaluable as a quick reference guide, when I hit something new. Pages are tabbed by topic to make finding what you want a relatively painless task. In addition to being a very complete guide to HTML, it is also great for information on using multimedia, Cascading Style sheets and graphics on ... Read the complete review
