Second Fiddle is about a lady named Laura who falls in love with a much younger man, Claud. Laura usually does not allow herself to become emotionally involved in relationships and normally has occasional flings. Claud is a budding young author who seems to have had a negative childhood in that his father had been a drunk who occasionally took out his temper on his wife in a physical sense. He is insecure in his writing abilities and depends on Laura's praise to keep him going. The book is set in some village somewhere but who knows where and who cares.
